With 26 Emmy nominations and 11 winnings, Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen grew up to be one of the best series of all time. It has received more nomination and critical applause than any other show in 2020. But will there be a follow up to this series or are the showrunners planning to wind up? With so many debates still going on, the fate of Watchmen Season 2 remains ambiguous.
Watchmen Season 1 was originally promoted by HBO. The show premiered on October 20, 2019, as a drama series and completed it on December 15 on the same year with nine episodes. Lindelof departed from the show soon after that statement he had completed everything he ever intended with the series. HBO had then stated that they were not planning for a sequel unless Lindelof returned to the show. HBO added the possibility of future instalments of the limited series although there has been no confirmation on the record.
What is the Future of Watchmen Season 2?
Usually, when a series becomes a massive success, HBO demands sequels as in the case of True Detective and Big Little Lies. These shows which were planned for a single Season was continued for a long run due to the huge fanbase. The case of Watchmen, however, might not be the same. It might not take the footsteps of True Detective and Big Little Lies, not at the current scenario at least. When asked about the same to Lindelof about the show’s fate, he was firm. He said.

“It would feel like a huge betrayal of winning limited series to come back and say, ‘it was only a limited series.” He also added that he would welcome sequels from any artist who plan on doing so. “Watchmen is something I’ve loved since I was 13 years old. Someone else created it, and this was my run on it. I’ve invited any other artist who wants to take the baton.”
Watchmen Season 2 is coming?
“I would love to see someone who is not a white dude taking a shot at watchmen”. He added “a woman or a person of colour or both. Most of the good ideas that ended up in this season did not come from a white dude.” Sometimes it is better to cease a show with a hit than completely ruining it with sequels. When asked about Lindelof’s opening for the sequel, HBO President Casey Boys commented.
“There are no plans to do anything. It is hard to imagine doing it without Damon. It seems unlikely, he told a pretty complete story. Never say never but there are no plans for another instalment.” In addition to all these, the series had ended with a cliff-hanger with Angela Abar ( Regina King) consuming an egg that may or may not has given her the ability to walk on water.
These kinds of climaxes demand a possible future. But according to the showrunners, that was it. Angela’s story ceased with her almost having her husband’s Dr Manhattan’s power. The Superhero drama focuses on a modified version of the 1921 Tulsa race massacre which also became poignant in 2020 with the George Floyd protests.
