Google Now Has its Own Version of Apple Airdrop: What to Expect

Highlights

  • Google releases its Nearby Share after rumours and speculations
  • For now, it will only be available on Pixel, Samsung and Chromebooks
  • Compatibility for iOS and Mac is an option in the future, said Google spokesperson

Google has finally launched its own take on Apple’s Airdrop feature called “Nearby Share”. It allows any two Android devices of Android 6.0 or above to quickly share files between each other. After years of speculations and rumours, Google has officially announced that they will be adding this feature to only Google Pixel and Samsung phones for now. The feature will also be compatible with Chromebooks in months to come.

The feature was uncovered earlier this year written within Android 10’s code. Previously rumoured to be called Fast Share, the feature works similar to Apple’s Airdrop where you select a file you wish to share, choose the “Nearby Share” option, and wait for a compatible device near you. When your device detects such a device, it will appear on your screen upon which you can select the phone by tapping over it. The receiver will have the option to either accept or reject the incoming file, so as to keep the user away from receiving undesirable files.

Features of Nearby Share:

  • Allows any two Android devices of Android 6.0 or above to quickly share files between each other
  • It automatically chooses the best protocol for sending the file upon activation.
  • You can change your privacy settings between  Hidden, Some Contacts, and All Contacts
  • You can anonymously send and receive files

Google has also said that the feature, upon being activated, will automatically choose the best protocol for sending the file. Among those protocols are Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy, WebRTC, or peer-to-peer WiFi. You can use this feature even when you are offline.

In a fashion similar to Airdrop, Nearby Share will give you the option to customize the visibility of your device to other Android devices near you. You can change your privacy settings between the following options: Hidden, Some Contacts, and All Contacts.

Google also clarified in a blog post that you can anonymously send and receive files on Nearby Share.

But for now, Nearby Share will be restricted to Google’s products and soon, Chromebooks. You won’t be able to share to any iOS and macOS devices. Supporting these platforms, however, is a plan in the future, said by a Google’s spokesperson.
